Liquid Music
A Hybrid Interactive Installation

In cooperation with the
Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM)

Zhe Li belongs to a new generation of creators, who are dealing with object, virtuality and the interface between them. He creates multimedia installations that can be experienced through space, light and acoustics.

Liquid music is a hybrid installation, in which the sound of water, in its manifold forms such as falling drops or the sound of breaking waves, together with abstract and apparently flowing animations form a liquid space. This virtual universe can be directly experienced by the spectator, who dives into the 3-dimensional ambience and generates new form and colour compositions every second, by using a touchscreen as an interface with the generator of the artificial water world.

Liquid Music is not the demonstration of water as an element, but the manuscript of the digital media artist; it shows an abstract, significantly reduced electronic quotation and an open play.

The installation has been developed and realized with the support and collaboration of Cologne’s Academy of Media Arts*.

Zhe Li was born in 1976 in Beijing, China. He studied industrial design at Tsinghua University in Beijing. In 2006, he finished his master's degree in media design at the Academy of Media Arts (KHM), Cologne and returned to China to work in his home-town, Beijing.

(* In 1990, the Academy for Media Arts (KHM), as the first academy in the Federal Republic of Germany devoted to all areas of audio-visual media, began its undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programme. The name "Academy of Media Arts" itself expresses the entire spectrum of interests supported by teaching and research at this institution, namely art in the age of its technological (re)production. www.khm.de)
